Don’t like the packaging? Leave it on the shelf!

Standard

At last. It’s lovely that normal people are finally agreeing with what I’ve been banging on about for the last year. Lots of big companies are beginning to make noises too about cutting down plastic, but then again lots of them aren’t. Wouldn’t it be great if it was illegal to sell packaged produce cheaper than unpackaged? Once again, j’accuse Sainsbury’s.

Garlic in Sainsbury's Wimbledon on 15/1/18

Loose bulbs in Sainsbury’s Wimbledon on 15/1/18 come in at 30p/bulb, whereas those in plastic netting with a plastic label are 23.5p each. As I’ve said before, the only justification for this is that people see that the netted bulbs are cheaper and buy them. They then don’t use them up, because actually they only wanted one and end up throwing them away, thereby adding to food waste as well as plastic loading.

What can we do? Don’t buy it. If you have a choice always buy unpackaged. It works out cheaper in the ling run, because you only buy what you need rather than being fooled into buying more than you need because of a perceived discount.
